flotsam was early again

Flotsam has been arriving early to meetings for a few weeks now. today Ripple gets there and finds them already set up in the hallway with a tape measure, a sheet of acrylic, and a thermostat component from Anchor Electronics.

• Ripple: is that the weatherproofing
• Flotsam: finally getting to it
• Ripple: what made you come back to it
• Flotsam: (after a pause) i've been walking out to Mountain Lake Park on weekends. to look at the ducks
• Ripple: ...okay
• Flotsam: they're out there in all weather. rain, wind, whatever. they're fine. but i kept thinking about our ducks on the front porch in january and february and i just — i wanted them to have what those ducks have. a place that's actually theirs. properly
• Ripple: so you're building it
• Flotsam: i'm building it

they put the materials to the side when the others arrive. but everyone has seen them.

the new spot

the pond is in the hallway outside the RNA Lounge now, near the kitchen. it's a narrower space than the front porch. no sky. the ceiling is lower.

it's also not bad.

• Flotsam: the base is solid. i reinforced it saturday. Ken's truck was essential
• Ken: it wasn't a big deal
• Flotsam: it was a big deal
• Ken: (accepting this) okay

the ducks look fine. Sergeant Bubbles is in the same position he always takes. The Intern has claimed the center again. Admiral Quackbar and Duckminster Fuller are facing the same direction they always face, just from a different angle now.

MC Escher has not moved at all. he was already here.

• Tidepool: it feels smaller
• Stillwater: it is smaller
• Tidepool: but also kind of cozy?
• Eddy: like camping
• Quorum: we are not camping. we're in a hallway
• Eddy: like hallway camping

Perry is looking at the amp. at MC Escher. at the hallway.

• Perry: he was always going to be fine, wasn't he
• Lumen: yeah. he was already home

where's durt

nobody saw him leave exactly.

Saturday morning Flotsam arrived for the migration and Durt was in the pond. by the time Ken had the truck loaded and the pond was drained, Loren (mcint) had shown up. they didn't say much. looked at Durt for a while. Durt looked back.

by the time the pond was refilled and the ducks were resettled upstairs, Durt wasn't in it.

• Flotsam: i assumed he'd turn up
• Ripple: he hasn't
• Flotsam: no

nobody is sure where they went.

• Eddy: he'll be back
• Ripple: probably
• Eddy: he always seemed like someone who'd go and come back

Sergeant Bubbles is in the pond. the space where Durt used to settle — near Bubbles, slightly apart — is empty.

nobody puts a different duck there.

the ducks have opinions

it takes a while before Lumen says it.

• Lumen: have you noticed Admiral Quackbar
• Ripple: what about him
• Lumen: he's facing slightly wrong
• (everyone looks)
• Eddy: ...yeah. he's like fifteen degrees off
• Flotsam: Duckminster Fuller shifted too. he's closer to the wall than usual
• Stillwater: The Intern is fine
• Quorum: The Intern is always fine. The Intern is very resilient
• Tidepool: they're annoyed
• Ripple: they're ducks
• Tidepool: they're annoyed ducks. we moved them. we didn't ask. we didn't tell them it was coming. we just showed up on saturday and drained their pond
• Eddy: what were we supposed to do, hold a duck consultation
• Tidepool: ...maybe?

a pause.

• Ripple: (quietly) we did kind of just do it to them
• Flotsam: we had to
• Ripple: yeah. and we still did it to them without asking

nobody puts anyone in the wrong. it's just true.

• Perry: to be fair, the welding class sounds like it's going to be good for the space
• Ken: the new shelves are going to be good. i actually sourced a couple of the heavy bracket supports Blitzkrieg needed — the regular ones weren't going to hold the load
• Flotsam: i didn't know that
• Ken: (shrugging) it needed doing

• Stillwater: so the clearout is genuinely an improvement
• Ken: yeah. i think it's going to look a lot better down there
• Tidepool: (to the slightly-off Admiral Quackbar) you'll see when you get back. it'll be worth it

Admiral Quackbar does not rotate. but he also doesn't rotate further away.

on accessibility

at some point in the meeting Stillwater observes that the front porch — their usual spot — is actually the most accessible place in the building. ground level. no stairs. right at the entrance.

• Stillwater: i don't think we've ever said that out loud but it's true. the pond is in the most ADA accessible spot in NB
• Lumen: we just put it there because it made sense
• Stillwater: yeah. sometimes you do the right thing without knowing it's the right thing

nobody makes a big deal of it.

three days

welding class starts wednesday. they won't meet here next sunday. they'll be at The Sycamore — NB West — while the class uses the space.

• Ripple: i've never held a meeting at a bar before
• Quorum: it'll be fine
• Tidepool: are we bringing any ducks
• (everyone considers this)
• Ripple: i think the ducks stay here. they're settled. they don't need to move again
• Lumen: MC Escher definitely stays. he's on an amp
• Eddy: the ducks hold down the fort. we go to the bar
• Stillwater: that feels right

it's a hallway. the ducks don't seem to mind. the humans are adjusting.

on durt

Lumen wrote at the bottom of the page: the space where he floated is still empty. we're leaving it.

on spacebridge

Spacebridge launched last week. most people at NB don't seem to know about it. the guild didn't discuss it.

Sergeant Bubbles has not moved. but something about his stillness today seems pointed.

(lumen note: unclear if this is related. probably not. probably.)
