Election!

[edit | edit source]

https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Board/2026/Elections

Process The 2025 Board appoints a nominating committee, which will collect nominations & confirm willingness to stand for election & serve, with each nominee. A membership committee board is also materializing membership status from meeting & donation records. The steps we need to complete:

  • Announce (30+ days in advance)
  • Nominations (nominate someone https://forms.gle/X5SZKSMHbvHYZ3sD6 - open until 2026-03-24 23h59 PST)
    • Acceptance of nominations (don't skip this step)
  • Election
    • Counting & Announcement
  • Handover

Loren: NB is a nonprofit 501c3. this week through next Tuesday 24th @ midngiht we have nominations open to serve on the board. don't have to be a member! [may not nominate a pet -naomi]. we run these just like consensus: approval voting, blocks prevent a person from getting on the board. Someone needs to vote once to support, and no blocks, to elect someone.

Kavya: what positions are there?

Loren: to serve on the board you serve as interface to the outside world. e.g. we had to open some new accounts with the SFFCU, they requested minutes from a board meeting to open that account. boards bear ultimate legal responsiblity. we have board insurance, so as long as you're not grossly negligent, you'll be protected. 1st thing is we appt officers which are entrusted to carry out what actions on behalf of the organization. Officers don't have to be board members, but if we didn't trust them enough to be on the board then it's maybe weird we'd trust them to be officers. we like to have at least 5 ppl, might max us out at 10? affects the definition of "quorum" for CA legal purposes.

JD: what are the typical offices

Loren: Treasurer, Secretary, President we haven't made use of it but maybe can be useful sometimes

A good pattern for board to follow: delegating and extending tasks / delegating into community working groups. e.g. doing woodshop upgrades, that spending needs to have oversight and board can form committees to do some of that.

JD: that committee could function b/c it wasn't taking up air in the weekly meetings to be able to statement.

Elan: echoing everything, but adding in: one doesn't need to be a member of any kind to be on the board. but these are big positions of trust.

  • Kavya - Access Member - sponsored by Naomi - sewing circle runner every Tuesday

Consensus Items

[edit | edit source]

Discussion Items

[edit | edit source]

1: A sleeper in Noisebridge needs to be addressed

[edit | edit source]
On topic: A sleeper in Noisebridge needs to be addressed
From/Raised by: Daniel (Web)
Seeking: Outcome

Daniel (Web): someone has on many many occasions not necessarily overnight but they nap in the music room pretty often and been caught in the act, occasionally admitted or occasionally lied. many ppl have given them "last warnings". we've given them a lot of leeway.

Jet: who is it?

Daniel (Web): Lucifer [Naomi and others confirm]

Loren: tempted to add context... [Loren informs a large meeting crowd about our norms, see ATL and ATD pages --Nthmost]. So Daniel, what's your request or suggestion?

Daniel (Web): i think you said ask to take a break... there's never been an escalation like "we need to remove this person"...

David: i've caught her sleeping but she seems really nice... what i wanna know is like, what is it like, she's just slumped over her desk?

Daniel (Web): yeah

Loren: yeah as half a dozen ppl have said, tons of ppl have said "this is your last warning" -- ppl don't come here to police ppl and gossip about it, (it just keeps going on) -- useful to state in a meeting like this "this is the pattern". She's very nice about it but just b/c they're nice while they're breaking a rule...

JD: this may seem like an overly harsh reaction but this place has a history and the mere fact that we're right on Capp st and have a radical open door policy, easy for ppl to notice they can get away with things

Naomi: we are under legal liabilty if poeple are caught sleeping here

People can, have filed complaints with the city. (Sometimes sleepers asked to leave have turned around and reported the issue to the city.)

- we did see someone sleeping in the Music Room [how where the sleeping?] they were at the computer desk and

Elan: how much was the threatened fine from the city @ the old location?

Naomi: i can't recall, that was 2014

Elan: someone told me almost $10k....

Jet: do not fall asleep at NB. if you feel yourself falling asleep here it's past time to go home!

Daniel (Web): i feel like a month ATL would be good. more than 6 warnings and don't seem to care.

(general consensus occurs)

2: Arcade cabinet restoration

[edit | edit source]
On topic: Arcade cabinet restoration
From/Raised by: Zach
Seeking: consensus

Zach: i'd like to restore this thing, any objections?

LX: i can try to help w/ that Zach -- a few ppl since GDC parties + consoles trying to step up to help w/ the whole area. ppl who'd love to be trained by YOU. we can get info from Arity and anyone else, form a guild of ppl who can maintain it. 3+ volunteers to become maintainers of each machine.

Zach: i was on the original design team w/ the cabinet!

Dennis: i've also wanted to work on that too

Jet: yeah please get connected up w/ Zach

3: City Parking Ticket volunteer work thing

[edit | edit source]
On topic: City Parking Ticket volunteer work thing
From/Raised by: Loren
Seeking: decision/outcome/advice/[?]

Loren: if you have parking and traffic tickets you can't pay, you can sometimes work off those tix w/ nonprofit orgs.

David: how does that work -- go to the city and say you want to volunteer at Noisebridge?

Loren: basically yes. letting others know we may go forward w/ formalizing this more

4: GAMING! Night

[edit | edit source]
On topic: Gaming Night
From/Raised by: LX
Seeking: decision/outcome/advice/[?]

LX: Permaculture - this was so successful as a game night that we'd like to make it a weekly thing, of which smash would be. a biweekly compoentnt but also for devs to come show indie games every week. LAN parties, alt between PC gaming and console gaming, rotate who's running depending on the focus. Q: ideas for WHEN we should set this up for? Assuming probably be good to happen on a Friday night or something. still need to hear from Carrion and others, it'd be an active weekly thing like a weekly party.

David: nnoooooo I work on Fridays! Could it be Thursday instead?

Jet: do you need anything from NB? something that would have stripper poles, booze, amplified music?!? trying to think of what JD would say

LX: designed to be a party - more fun than serious/brainy - abs. want to work on visuals, lighting, music, fun for new ppl to come to NB to learn about it. everyone can be involved in making it great not just gamer types. Come to the #gaming channel on Discord

Carrion: there are ppl passionate about keeping the gaming area, going to set it up to be more attractive -- nicer to be in, so games aren't dusty etc. if anyone wants to jump

5: Rave event

[edit | edit source]
On topic: Proposal for a Rave audio visual event
From/Raised by: Jane
Seeking: decision/outcome/advice/[?]

Jane: A/V showcase, dance music as a medium, would like to highlight

Jet: when?!

Jane: April 25th 10pm-2am. (Sat)

Jet: alcohol?

Jane: nooo....?

Marceli: [redacted]

https://nb.wtf/host -- hosting an event

JD: are going to be charging admission, who's collecting this, where does it go. Will artists get paid?

Jane: we were thinking $10 min NOTAFLOF, i have a biz account on Venmo. Artists will get paid.

JD: we were just having this convo earlier, events that don't seem to be "Noisebridge" events to be held to take the space for some amount of time, versus events run by NBers for NB purposes -- there are concerns. so when ppl are paying to use the space-- it costs us $460 a day to run the space and we're all contributing to make the place happen. so when we're asked to essentially not use the place b/c there's an event hapening, it needs to be significantly more than what we're already paying to keep the lights on.

Jane: that makes sense

Loren: sponsor?

Jet: how many ppl do you expect to come?

Jane: i've hosted a few events... i expect 50-100 ppl.

Jet: you'll need a permit b/c of that. do you know about that?

Jane: oh!

Marceli: i helped w/ Chris's rave event, getting the permit + insurance.

(convo about who can be a bartender, how that can work, ppl talk about CA process)

Joseph: if it works w/ the schedule of NB...

JD: it has to be worked out for while. we made $4000 off that in 4 days. that's money in our pocket. b/c ppl who are using it are displacing normal activities.

Loren: serving our membership + our mission.

JD: my personal opinion is, when we first moved into this space, hey we can get away w/ anything -- we had punk shows here where kids went up and down the street tagging all oer the place. been through it w/ the city -- faced huge fine if we were anything but a light industrial space. finally cleared our fine from doing events and "stuff in the middle of the night". neighbors have complained from being too high-profile. We have had events being super respectful of the neighborhood and it was fine.

Loren: to the extent that we can get a pass from the neighbors, we do this w/ our own anniversary parties, and perhaps as often as quarterly for ourselves internally, but probably can't do this more than once a month, even with highly responsible event hosts.

Joseph: mentioned it costs $460/day --

Naomi: I want to address this. We can't, we don't want to "sell access" to the space. And we don't want to, wont set a policy or a precedent of "we need to rent out the space for e.g. $600 / day"

There's a greater cost, an externality, to "renting" the space. If affects the culture. [It's a backdoor way of authorizing things askew of our culture.]

Joseph: I have a friend, who runs an agency. We like to support the community. We were thinking of telling other ppl about using NB as a space...

Nthmost: Sounds again marginal, [with a specific outside beneficiary].

Jet: the Welding Event was our ideal case for a thing that took over the space and remunerated us really well.

Naomi: i'd also encourage you guys (Sewing Guild) not to bother w/ the "donate percentage back to NB" thing because historically it hasn't come to much. please focus on bringing in excellent ppl who are KIND and who do cool shit, who then become members -- because that's how we end up getting our returns on these events over time (membership donations etc).

Jet: yeah don't think of this as a business deal.

LX: Suggestions for music event: streamline support where we direct them to the event umbrella guild to help them out. #event-support on Discord. Wheezy's not here but he's been trying to take the music guild and organize it to be more fancy and cool, not sure about plans but i'd suggest we make music event planning a function of the music guild. I'm also a musician i'd also love to participate more in music stuff. developmnet of the A/V system -- we're also trying to develop out the whole event space, like it used to at NB. NB used to be a total vibe at night. i'm interested in talking to you Jenny to collaborate on a permanent setup for doing A/V and making ALL the events better, if it's monthly.

6: 5mof.net this thursday

[edit | edit source]
On topic: 5mof.net this thursday
From/Raised by: Jet
Seeking: decision/outcome/advice/[?]

5mof.net https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/5MoF/2026/03_19

Jet: I'm HOSTING an EVENT! Can you BELIEVE IT!??!?

every 3rd Thursday we do five minutes of fame. we have all types of crazy crap, from home VCR repair, pixel smashing, and get your high school degree.

LX: we installed swings on the BART after a 5MoF talk about installing swings on the BART

Dennis: like a NB version of TedTalk?

(generally nodding and assent)

! THIS THURSDAY in the RNA LOUNGE AREA!

Jet: topcs don't have to be submitted ahead of Thursday but it's appreciated

Joseph: how often?

Do-ocratic Task Board

[edit | edit source]

Participation also means doing stuff to contribute to the space. Propose new tasks or pick some tasks from Github, from what needs to be done around you, or whatever, and see if someone will sign up to work on that task. Anyone can sign up and it's a great way to show you are contributing!
