'll be 40 in November, but I had a mammogram last year when I had mastitis (I've never had kids so doc wanted to play it safe). I had to wait until after the mastitis cleared because of the pain I was in, but it wasn't too bad. Where I had it done, they were as discreet as possible. They had me put on this cape gown thing and I was only exposed as much as I needed to be. They took films from 4 different positions, two on either side. A female tech took the films, then she left the room to talk to the male doctor to see if all was good and if further films were needed. The tech was never in the room when I changed, and they had me behind a curtain within the room as well, so they gave me as much privacy as they could. I will admit that it isn't comfortable to put your boob on the platform and have it smoosh your boob flat, but I wouldn't say that it hurt. It pinched here and there but it was tolerable. I was a 38J/JJ at the time and they had no problems doing the mammogram, and didn't have me do anything special to compensate that I was aware of. My films were fine so I didn't have to have anymore taken. There can be issues with the mammogram not picking up everything if your breasts are especially dense. I'm of average density so they had no problems with my films. I was notified of this by mail, along with the results. I haven't had it done yet this year, but should probably get it on my calendar. I was super nervous before I had mine done, too, but it was pretty routine. I would recommend not doing it during pms if your breasts get tender because getting the mammogram would definitely hurt then. Otherwise, if your breasts aren't painful beforehand, you should be fine. I don't remember having any pain afterwards, so if I had any, it wasn't bad and didn't last.
