Discord is a multi-channel voice and chat application that is great for continuous voice, video, screen sharing, and live streaming conversations. At Noisebridge, we use it for most public conversation.

Issues with Joining[edit | edit source]

Note: you will be unable to join Noisebridge's discord server while connecting to the internet via Noisebridge's wifi or network.

The discord server is accessible on Noisebridge wifi if you've already joined. However, due to

Discord banning policies,
Noisebridge's on-again/off-again use of "community server" mode,
and the fact that we've banned discord accounts that joined-from/last-connected from Noisebridge's network,

Discord denylists Noisebridge's IP for account joining the server.

Channels visible[edit | edit source]

When joining the Discord, you'll be asked about the kids of activities you'd like to take part in, in the space. This Discord form includes you in channels or sets of channels that relate to those expressed interest areas.

Many users expressed feeling overwhelmed by the sheer number of channels. The onboarding questionaire limits the channels you'll initially see, and therefore also get notifications from (user preferences permitting).

Because you may not be in all channels, we highly recommend that you use search in discord to navigate, especially when uncertain. Search will help you see channels, and messages from channels, you may not yet be in.

If channels "feel too loud" with notifications, try muting all but a few, or consider changing your preferences for the server, or for your discord user overall.

We have a Bravespace channel, for working out some difficult, complicated, or persistent dynamics or interactions that detract from pursuit of the mission by as many excellent hackers as possible in the space. Consistently, many people find that having awareness of these conflicts and concerns raised detractions from their enjoyment & excellent use of the space, even if they never directly witness related events. So, some members recommend not joining the channel if it's likely it would detract from your participation in the community.

You'll possibly see a x-discord-irc "bot" in a #irc channel, you can chat either in irc or discord and the messages will be relayed.
