Introductions

Short announcements and events

[edit | edit source]

Ken - Wall is going forward. Still don't have the materials but trying to source them. Hard to ge tthe metal studs. Tomorrow gonna be looking at more options. Gonna try to get the account with a lumberyard that will have the materials.

Ken also - Mentioned on #woodshop thread. Probably need to close the shop during wall-building. Maybe some people can use it in off-hours when not actively building, but the official line is that the shop will be closed.

Elle - we have 3 volunteer teachers for sewing - moving along on that work of hosting more classes and workshops.

Elle also - want to meet and talk about grantwriting. (past, had 12 occasions of showing up from Hayward, when no one else joined, despite promises).

Thinking about framing new grantwriting events as classes : "how to grantwriting"

Zack - gonna build a physical suggestion box

Loren - FinanceWG meeting

Loren - WikiWG meeting

Elle - fundraising meeting with Loren -- at some point

Financial Report

[edit | edit source]

Thanks to an uptick due to auction payment through benevity, we had a decent month. Some stuff from July came through tho, but yeah. Think 25% deficit rather than closer to 50% deficit.

Revenue 9,323.69
Operating Expenses 12,430.07 + 226.76 or so in other expenses

Only for talking about Big C consensus items, small c consensus items should be discussed with people at the space at the time of the change/new item or can be reserved for the discussion section of the meeting.

Discussion Items

[edit | edit source]

It is recommended to post items for discussion ahead of time at https://pad.riseup.net/p/nbmeeting. (Check that the template for the meeting is in place already, and that last week's notes have been moved to the wiki, of course)

Item prompts should follow the format: From/Raised by: [your name here] Seeking [decision/outcome/advice/something else] On topic: [topic]

Discussion Item 1

From/Raised by: EHR
Seeking
On topic: Mice

NB Has Mice. DO NOT LEAVE FOOD AROUND!

Want small-c consensus on getting non-lethal mice traps.

No objections.

Zack offers to buy and asks treasury for reimbursement.

Zach next steps are blue tape & pen.

Unique names & numbers across lockers is valuable. Discord & Wiki.

From/Raised by: Elle
On topic: Art walk event (cleanup before, ..., ...)
Seeking: ...?

(Will be a great draw for us)

1. Cleanup friday before (September 22nd)

2. We will have art displayed throughout the space. a) display areas chosen, b) docent-hosts to give tours in space.

3. Who will get permission to display their art? (restricted to NB Members? Associate Members? Anyone? Folks are already asking. People who just come by once in a while.

(Zack says ppl have been asking him too. We apparently got signed up to host some people from artspan itself. 1 is excited to do it with us. a couple others politely declined after we explained to them the "no gaurantees" nature of our space)

4. Should have a party at the end!

70$ for a particular DJ's time and effort or tell them we have no budget and see if they are willing to do it for free?

If you're not volunteering yourself, you're volunteering someone else.

Zach: I can coordinate DJ, door being open, volunteers.

Money & food handling things.

Omelia -- party planning -- volunteer to head it up.

Discussion Item 7

[edit | edit source]
From/Raised by: David Lopez @davidlopez
On topic: 3d printer room -- fed up with
Seeking: (vent &)...outcome

During covid, calibrated every printer. Now only 2 work.

Someone brought in their own printer, cannibalized 2 printers that worked, to fix theirs.' (new NB printer? or old)

Have 6 others at home that I would donate, don't have space for. But they're not usable here.

Lots of people walking in and out of printer room.

Ken: came up before. Separate "good" printer room.

Creality -- requires careful calculation.

Outcomes sought:

  • 3d printer
    • Training
    • Maintainers (seeking volunteers)
      • in meeting: David Lopez,
      • per wiki: Max?, rugyoga
      • guy?
    • Guild
  • Lock, RFID update. ASAP.
  • Signage in room. Wiki. Culture -- what's the driving.

Elle - same kind of thing happened/ happens in sewing room. Ppl have meetings in the room, and while talking, tinker w/ things and break them while doing so.

Discussion Item 7+

[edit | edit source]
From/Raised by: Zach / Ken
Seeking: consensus
On topic: John in the Shop

People hit by flying wood from the tablesaw. People unwilling to use or be in the woodshop while john is working.

Another several incidents with John in the shop.

Proposal: Indefinitely suspended priviledges to use the woodshop.

(the shop is going to be closed for construction)

(you're welcome to come to a meeting, and talk through.) (mediation meeting -- coordinated timing)

Unsafe use of equipment. Destroying equipment in the process.

  • New planer, now has
  • Cutting through nails, in my presence

2 situations

  • Senior gentle man with grey hair, tall. John hounded behind him, the whole time. I told him "you need to back off". The gentleman told him to leave.
  • Another incident. Something didn't go right with him. Thursday. Left the shop yelling and screaming, cursing, slammed the door, cursing all the way down the street.

John's taking full advantange of the woodshop.

That full advantage is now abuse of the woodshop. He doesn't seem to get the proper way of working with the tools

Having the blade fully extended, cutting very small pieces.

Sawstop is not a substitute for normal safety practices. Tripped dozens of times. If not for the sawstop he would not have any fingers left.

Asked him today, that he shouldn't be using the saw, with the saw stop.

He's not in the discord. It's deliberate -- continuously, extremely convenient.

How long is it going to continue.

Full face of sawdust months ago.

Indefinite suspension.

Closing the woodshop. For wall building

Most notably, at its core, this is about use of community, burden on community versus contribution to the community.

He produces more dust than the rest of us combined.

I've had him cannibalize use of my wood, in the time that it took me to get food.

Proposal is small-c consensed.
